May Is National Electrical Safety Month
We
all use electricity every day to keep things moving along in our busy
lives. Some of us deal directly with potential electrical hazards on the
job. While it is always important to be aware of nearby electrical
devices, the month of May is a prime opportunity to renew that
awareness. May is National Electrical Safety Month.
Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is a nonprofit
organization focused on promoting electrical safety in homes, schools,
and workplaces. Annually, ESFI sponsors a campaign to educate its key
audience. This year’s theme is Electrical Safety During Natural
Disasters. This campaign focuses on preparing for, surviving, and
rebuilding after natural disasters.
OSHA estimates that more than 2,000 workers go to the hospital each year
for treatment of injuries from arc-flash burns. This figure may be
deflated, since all incidents may not be reported. According to a study
published in Industrial Safety and Hygiene News, an estimated 30,000
arc-flash incidents occur annually, resulting in 7,000 burns and 400
fatalities. See these tips to help reduce these figures and keep your operators safe.
