What are the latest NEC updates on arc flash labels and how will they impact workers?
The 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) includes changes for arc flash labeling in Article 110:16 Arc-Flash Hazard Marking. So, what are the updates and how will they impact workers?
The 2023 edition only required labels to be applied to service equipment and feeder-supplied equipment in commercial and industrial settings that were rated 1000 A or more. Now all service equipment and feeder-supplied equipment — including switchboards, switchgear, enclosed panelboards, industrial control panels, and motor control centers — require a label.
There’s also an important update regarding items listed on the label. Rather than including the date the label was applied, arc flash labels must now list the date the assessment was completed:
The marking shall comply with 110.21(B), be located so as to be clearly visible to qualified persons, and be in accordance with applicable industry practice, containing the following information:
- The nominal system voltage
- The arc flash boundary
- The available incident energy or minimum required level of personal protective equipment
- The date the assessment was completed
This update makes it easier for workers to know which PPE is required to work on the equipment. The 2026 edition of the NEC officially became available for government entities to update their electrical installation regulations in September 2025. The enforcement timeline varies by state.
