That commitment recently took the CBS ArcSafe team to Houston for the International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) Conference & Trade Show, where we were honored to present alongside Marathon Petroleum on a subject that sits at the center of everything we do: “Ensuring Personnel Safety During Electrical Equipment Isolation.” The session explored the hazards of operating electrical distribution gear, how to read incident energy and approach boundaries, and how remote operation technologies can move personnel outside the arc flash boundary while equipment is safely isolated.
Ben Walterscheid, VP of power products at Group CBS; Kyle Fincher, CBS ArcSafe operations manager; and Doug Hendershot, Group CBS strategic sales executive for oil and gas, also met with customers, partners, and industry professionals to discuss remote switching, remote racking, and the complete electrical lifecycle support that Group CBS provides.
Electrical Safety Around the World
The electrical safety mission is what connected the trip to Houston with a second stop this summer, an ocean away: the SKANWEAR Global Electrical Safety Conference at the Royal Institution in London. Ben had the opportunity to visit the legendary institution, where many groundbreaking scientific discoveries and world-changing discussions have taken place, and participate in the “Designing for Electrical Safety — Risk Reduction Methods” panel. He joined other industry experts to discuss how engineering decisions across the electrical lifecycle — from arc flash mitigation to smarter equipment layout — can improve both worker safety and system reliability well before a technician ever approaches a breaker.
That same throughline ran through the keynote delivered by H. Landis “Lanny” Floyd II, a Life Fellow of the IEEE and one of the foundational figures in modern electrical safety, in part due to his role in developing empirical models used to predict arc incident energy. For a team whose daily work is grounded in protecting workers from arc incident energy, the address made for a full-circle moment.
