Remote racking solutions position workers outside the recommended arc-flash boundary to ensure safety.
It’s important to respect arc-flash hazard stickers to keep people safe. Positioning workers outside the recommended arc-flash boundary when they remove and install circuit breakers is a preferred method of ensuring safety.
CBS ArcSafe’s RRS-1 universal remote racking system allows you to do just that. The RRS-1 is designed to operate a wide variety of breakers with rotary-style racking mechanisms. Users can change installation and removal settings and switch tools quickly and easily to rack more than 240 different types of breakers. The system is highly customizable and can reach breakers up to 90 inches high and racking mechanisms as low as 1 inch off the ground. The benefit of the RRS-1 versus other racking systems is that users can directly adjust applied torque (via amperage) while ensuring protection of the breaker with a mechanical clutch.
For breaker installation and removal, a racking adapter is inserted in the circuit breaker faceplate to engage with the racking screw and is aligned with the rotating head on the RRS-1. A tether cord can be attached to the RRS-1 and to a magnet clamp on the circuit breaker panel.
Switches for options such as lights, a camera, wireless control, and a motor brake are located on the control box. The unit can be operated with a wired pendant that extends 35 feet or via a radio remote that works from 100 meters away with a clean radio path. The RRS-1 can also be equipped with a power slide system, which allows technicians to electrically adjust the height of the rotating head by turning the motor level control knob.
The unit has indicator lights and emits tones to signal when racking operations are complete. The system also displays the forces (via amperage) being used to rack the breaker, which can help operators diagnose cubicle issues.
Performing regular breaker maintenance will keep your breakers in good condition and help ensure that your equipment is working within normal operating conditions as specified by NFPA 70E standards. Regular training on your remote racking and switching equipment should also be part of your electrical safety program.
